Great Bear Island is an island off the coast of northern mainland Canada. It is the main setting of The Long Dark.
History
Great Bear Island was once a thriving region rich with natural resources and rustic communities. However, the abundance of natural resources on the island, such as lumber and coal, attracted the attention of industrial companies from the mainland who began to set up logging camps and coal mines all over the island. This upset many of the locals. Additionally, many modern amenities, such as banks, began popping up across the island, further angering the islanders who felt that such modernization had no place on Great Bear. Because of the encroachment of technology and industrialization on the island, many Great Bear residents developed a deep resentment and distrust of "mainlanders" and outsiders.
During the economic turmoil of The Collapse, approximately ten years before the events of The Long Dark, a series of major earthquakes rocked Great Bear, destroying much of the island's infrastructure and industry. As a result, the industrial companies that once flocked to reap the island's resources were forced to abandon their camps and mines, sending what was left of the local communities into economic turmoil. Great Bear never fully recovered from the quakes, and as a result, many abandoned facilities and ghost towns dot the island, remnants of a once thriving region.
