Cleaning or Rifle cleaning is a secondary survival skill that is used to repair hunting rifles. Higher levels in the rifle cleaning skill reduce the amount of time required to clean, and additionally increase the amount of condition restored to a rifle by cleaning.
Overview
Rifle cleaning involves using the rifle cleaning kit to keep a firearm, such as a hunting rifle, in optimal condition.
Rifle cleaning is only visible when maintaining a hunting rifle and is not an official survival skill in the player's journal. Players start with 30 skill points, and gain 1 additional skill point each time a rifle is cleaned.
How to clean rifles
Players can clean their hunting rifle with a rifle cleaning kit during daylight hours.
To actually clean a rifle, players have to select the "Clean" menu option while viewing the rifle to repair in the inventory menu. Repair amount and chance to succeed at the repair are listed on the right hand side of the screen.
Currently, players will always have a 100% chance of success while cleaning and cannot fail. Activating the start button on the bottom right will launch an attempt. Progress bar appears in the top right corner.
Cleaning a rifle consumes 5% condition from the rifle cleaning kit and restores some condition to the hunting rifle, based on the player's skill level. Each rifle cleaning kit can be used up to 20 times for repairing hunting rifles.
Equipment
Players need a rifle cleaning kit before they can start cleaning rifles. Rifle cleaning kits can be found while scavenging in containers and buildings that are likely to contain tools. Rifle cleaning kits are always found in 100% condition.

The player is not currently able to clean the distress pistol to improve its condition.
Skill levels
Players can increase their rifle cleaning skill by repairing a hunting rifle.
There are currently no research books that allow players to increase their rifle cleaning skill.
The rifle cleaning skill does not unlock any perks, but gives a gradual reduction to the amount of time required to clean, and additionally gives a gradual increase to the amount of condition restored to a rifle by cleaning. Key milestones (based on the amount of skill points) are listed in the table below.
